HEI |
| This letter is pronounced like a soundless breath, and is a symbol of the Divine Presence. When Elijah, the prophet witnessed roaring wind, earthquake and fire, none of these revealed to him the presence of God, only the silence of a gentle breeze which followed these great upheavals. The Breath of God, His Holy Spirit, "...hovered over the waters" in the story of creation in Genesis. According to Hebrew tradition, God created the Universe by uttering this letter which is composed of DALET, representing the physical world, and the small YUD, representing the World to Come, or the spiritual world. The DALET shows the expansion of width and height in the physical world, while YUD reminds us of God's imminent presence in the created world. HEI means LIFE. When Abram realized and acknowledged the One, Creator of the Universe, he was given the HEI in his name, thus becoming Abraham. Likewise, his wife Sarai, who was barren for many years, was given a new name, Sarah, with the addition of HEI to her name, when she conceived her son Isaac. In giving birth to Isaac she became the Matriarch of all Israel, the quintessential Jewish mother. Her tent was the prototype of all Jewish homes, always open with hospitality. Her dough was miraculously nourishing and always remained fresh, her Shabbath lamp remained alight throughout all the week. God's glory (Shechinah) rested over her tent in the same way as it was present over the Tabernacle later in Jewish history. The names ABRAHAM and SARAH are painted under the letter HEI to remind us of all this. The bright colours and the drawings of plants and animals signify God's act of creation of all that is, the diversity of all creation. The numerical value of HEI is five: there are five planets visible by the naked eye from earth, these are depicted in the upper left of the painting. In the Song of Songs, the Beloved (symbolizing God) peers through the lattices. These lattices are represented by the five gaps between the fingers of the Kohanim, as light is streaming. God hovers above them as they impart their blessing to the people of Israel, and through them to the whole world. |
