Welcome to the red planet! It is the fourth planet from the sun. It has two moons called Phobos and Deimos. Mars is named after the Roman god of War.

These pictures were sent back from the surface of mars.  it looks like a desert, but it is actually very cold. through a telescope mars looks like a rusty orange disc with some darker splodges and white ice caps at the north and south poles. There is no running water on Mars but dried up river beds show that Mars did have running water long ago. Mars has moon-like craters and has a volcano bigger than Mount Everest. Mars has a thin atmosphere of carbon dioxide and patches of cloud.

In 1659, Christian Huugens saw strange black figures going round Mars and thought that they were aliens. The first astronauts might visit in 2020.poknefytrj
