Page: 357Joshua Sidney Crook was a former director of Messrs. Joshua Crook and Sons Ltd. on Deane Road, Bolton, and a member of a family that has been associated with the cotton trade in Bolton for well over a century. As a young man he, along with two brothers, became a partner with their father in about 1880 as Joshua Crook and Sons, and four years later the firm was reorganised as a limited liability company. Joshua Sidney Crook became a director and remained in that position until the company was reconstructed during the post war boom in 1920. Since then Joshua Sidney Crook had not lived in Bolton. He was formerly a member of the Bolton Reform Club, and was connected with Bank Street Chapel.
He died aged 81 leaving a widow, to whom he was married only about five years.

Page: 286?According to an article in the "Journal and Guardian" of 19 May 1939 commenting on Arthur's 80th birthday it commented that Arthur Tipping Crook was one of those men who got through a great deal of public work without ever attracting much limelight to themselves. He was the sort who "do good by stealth and blush to find it fame". Indeed he would have been the last man to claim that he had done a great deal. And yet for the latter half of his 80 years he had been continuously active in one way or another, and generally in several areas at the same time. It was characteristic of him that, having put his hand to a particular piece of work he generally remained loyal to it, the exception being that he relinquished his seat on the Town Council after 13 years. He had a very long connection with the District Nursing Association, of which his daughter, Miss Jean Crook, was the hon. secretary, and had been its chairman since 1921; he had sat on the Royal Infirmary Committee since 1915, and was particularly interested in the Newlands Nursing Home; he had been on the board of the Savings Bank, as manager and trustee, since 1917, and had been its president for some years past; and had been a borough magistrate for 35 years. And he was Bolton's first special constable at the outbreak of the Great War in 1914.
