Some censuses give George's birthplace as Mearns, Bothwell, Dalziel, or "not Lanark."  His estimated birthdate also varied from 1824 to 1826.

According to his daughter Agnes' marriage certificate in 1885 he was an Iron Moulder.

14. Agnes Gilchrist CRAIG

In the 1881 census in Cambusnethan, William (b 1831) is living only with servants and a boarder at 220 Camnethan St (first floor) but is listed as having 33 acres of land.  At 186 Camnethan St (first floor) lived the Craig family with three daughters, Agnes 13 years, Jane 11 years and Isabella 9 years old.

William aged 54 then married Agnes Craig (b 1867) aged 18 in 1885.  Agnes was the young maid.  William and Agnes then had William (Bill) b1885, Janet Lindsay (Jenny) b1888, Agnes G (Nan) b1890, Mary (Polly) b1892, Jean (Jeanie) b1894, John L C b1897, Isabella Craig (Tibby) b1900 and David King (King) b1903.

In the 1891 census Agnes' two sisters, Jane and Bella are living with William and Agnes as servants.

In 1901 Agnes is living in Logie Stirling with six of the children (possibly on holidays) separate from William who was living at Cambusnethan in Kirknowe house.
