Thomas Baxendell was born in late 1791 or early 1792, in Oldham, Lancs.
The oldest son of Joseph Baxendell and Kitty/Catherine Brindle, he was christened at St. Mary’s Church, Oldham on 5th Feb. 1792. He married Mary Shepley and had a farm at Smedley, while carrying on a business as a land and building agent. He is recorded as being "an intelligent man, who by his own exertions raised himself from humble life." Of Mary Shepley, "it was related that she had a strong love of observing the heavenly bodies, knowing well the planets, and many of the heavenly constellations". This is a probable source for their son Joseph’s life-long devotion to astronomy.
Thomas lived at Cheetham Hill and spent his last years in Sale, Cheshire, living with his unmarried daughters, Mary Shepley and Anne, at Dunham View, Brooklands, Sale, Cheshire, and died 19th June 1874 at his son Joseph’s home in Birkdale Southport, Lancs.

Christening: Mention in "Modern English Biography" (supp. Abbott-Childers) Boase, F. pub Frank Cass 1965
Death: GRO Wills Calendar 1872
Mention in "Modern English Biography" (supp. Abbott-Childers) Boase, F. pub Frank Cass 1965"The Swainson and Birley Cotton Manufacturers of Preston from 1790" by Hope Koonz, San Jacinto, California,
published in an article from "The Manchester Genealogist" Vol.28 No.1 Jan 1992...."Anthony (Swainson) moved to Liverpool around 1802, and formed a partnership with Charles (Swainson), and with Charles' partners Joseph Baxendale and John Stephenson. Charles acted as the cotton manufacturer in Preston, while Anthony was merchant, broker and agent for the cotton in Liverpool"
The above is confirmed by a Deed of Partnership #DDH754 dated 18th January 1811, held in the Lancashire Record Office, Preston.Five years later Joseph became a partner in the firm of Thomas Pickford and Co......
from: The History of Pickfords1816 Following successive years of slump, the company reaches the points of
bankruptcy. The Pickfords family saves the company but sacrifices their connection
with it by selling out to new owners - Joseph Baxendale, Charles Inman and Zachary
Langton. After Matthew and Thomas Pickford, Baxendale the next great leader of the
company. His family will remain active in the company for almost 120 years.1817 Joseph Baxendale, Zachary Langton, Charles Inman and Hugh Hornby Burley
take over ownership of company from Pickfords family.Joseph Baxendale takes charge of canal and road networks and vigorously cuts down
waste and negligent operation. Company starts to rise from near bankruptcy.1825 Baxendale takes a keen interest in the possible emergence of railways.
Subsequently, he joins the board of several railway companies and holds shares in
docks, harbours and other ventures that would help further the fortunes of Pickfords.
The company's wagons ran on most of the new railways lines as soon as they opened,
starting a long argument with most railway owners who felt that all railway rolling stock
should be theirs and not the carriers.
1872 Joseph Baxendale dies aged 84 leaving company in the hands of his sons.
