Orenshaw Pylon Pipes:
Jim Orenshaw has been making Carbon Fiber Pipes for Racing Engines for Ages. I personally use his pipes on my Quarter Midget (21's).
Pictured to the left are the two products under review.
Definitely the weakest link in the QM 40 engine is its muffler. The problem is due to its canter lever design - meaning it is suspended at one end and everything is flopping around at the tail end. Under vibration this leads to breakage, when fatigue sets in. The same can be said for the inner tube pipe. The lighter you can get this tube the longer it will last - so Jim makes it out of Carbon Fiber Tube (Weights almost nothing).
Another problem is the parts of the original aluminum muffler often unscrews themselves. I have tried to reglue them back with special glues - but this is usually unsuccessful. Jim's pipe is all one piece - nothing to become unattached.
Jim has now come up with an excellent design. The magic Muffler is attached to the engine via an exhaust stub. It sits on a silicone tube at this location. I then wrap some very light wire around the pipe and then onto the engine to keep this in place. I then support the tail end loosely to the fuselage - also with a silicon mount. So the pipe is not only light but it is almost totally protected from vibration. This is a great idea!!
Jim does not bother to make up the exhaust stubs - they are easy to make, and it is better that you get it customized for your particular engine.
Pictured above are the two products that Jim makes.
au $100 for the Magic Muffler - au$60 for the 21 size pipe.
Remember the above is Australian Dollars!! (Half that of US$) postage will be extra!!
