Excel SCORING SYSTEM:

PYLON F3D (200 Points)      By John Hughan

World Championship F3D Scoring System

YOU NEED A SCORE SHEET FOR YOUR F3D EVENTS - WHY NOT USE THIS ONE OF THESE:

There are two programs below

Just  Click below to select the Excel Spread sheet that you require: They are reasonably Complex

Programs that do a lot of work.

Just click below on the Excel Spread sheet that you want.

You will have to do a considerable amount of dummy runs to ensure you are

familiar with the system.

Once you have used it you will find it a delight.

It is a system that eliminates the normal manual errors of calculating and adding up.

That is the whole idea of this system.

After mastering it you will not want to use anything else.

NOTE:

If after using this system you find that you need some changes

that will help your pylon group - please let me know, and I will do my best to satisfy

your needs!

CLICK THIS TO GET  WC EXCEL PROGRAM:

Click to get Excell program for normal (Non WC Scoring)

The above is a score sheet that I have designed for normal Racing

It works the same as the WC version but does not have the teams and countries facilities.  I did this because I found out that some Countries are using the WC Version for their normal events, and this was an overkill!!

To Save this program to your Hard Drive:

  1. Right Click the above

  2. Select "Save Target"

  3. Save it to Folder on your C Drive

  4. (Make it a Template)

  5. NOTE: You cannot access this Spread Sheet if you have your "Excel security"  set to HIGH - because that will not allow you access to my Macros: so set it to Medium! Use  Tools/Security to set:

This System was devised as a flexible Scoring System that can be altered to service any situation.

The Program Selected was Microsoft Excel which is a part of the Microsoft Office suite of Programs, that are freely and Internationally available to everyone.

The reason I did this was I was recovering from an operation some time ago and I wanted to do something to keep me entertained.  Also I knew that there is nothing really worthwhile around,  and this may be what is needed.

The system has embedded macros.  These are actually small programs that make thinks work - such as - eliminating the worst round when you have completed 4 rounds and two when you have completed 9 rounds - highlighting the scores that have been discarded.

When you access this system you will get a warning about Macros - YOU MUST ENABLE MACROS at this stage on command to make this program work.  - DO NOT BE AFRAID!!

The advantage of using Excel is that it is an International Program that usually resides on most computers. So this means that this Scoring System is truly transportable.

I designed this system for the Bundaberg F3D World Pylon Championships.  It was used there successfully.

It has a team score facility - suitable for WC purposes that is not really needed for local events.  So you can isolate that out if you require.

The System has the following features:

·        Only the variables have to be input  e.g.:

o       Country

o       Name

o       Minutes

o       Seconds

o       Cuts

 ·        All Mathematical Calculations are performed automatically which includes

o       Scores

o       Individual Totals ( Via a Macro Command  Shift+Ctrl+j   )

o       Team Totals

Using Excel Features it is possible to perform the following functions:

 ·        Sort Individuals into progress scores.

·        Hide rounds that are not as yet run so that printing can be accomplished without the unsightly view of a lot of blank rounds.                                 (Only the Rounds that have been scored will be shown)

·        Can reset the scoring sheet back to it original order.

·        Full Pager Printing up to 15 rounds - which can later be enlarged to A3 size in good quality to make it readable - using a normal photocopier.

·        Floppy disk copies can be made in Excel Format of the Final Placing and Scores.

USER GUIDE --HOW TO USE THE SCORING SHEET:

TO RUN THE PROGRAM AND INPUT VARIABLES:

1)     When you download this program.  I suggest Strongly that you make sure that you keep a copy of this Excel Sheet  permanently on your machine.

2)      I have made mine a template.  That means that I can access a fresh uncontaminated score sheet whenever I want.  You must never use this original to enter data. You should always enter data onto a copy of this original.

3)      When you open this score sheet you will be asked - do you want to Enable Macros - You Must Click the button Enable Macros when you open this Excel File - otherwise the Macro that I have written to perform the Totaling of the columns and excluding the Throw away rounds will not work.

4)      Key in all the Variable Data such as Country Name - Minutes - Seconds and cuts  for each round.  After keying in round data of Minutes and Seconds and Cuts you will note that the formula for accomplishing the calculation will take effect and the Score for each round will be displayed.

Please Note:  The macro that I have written will shown those rounds that have been thrown away  in Italics and bolded e.g.:  200 naturally those scores will not be counted in the Totals:

Zero scores will not be treated as a round that has been flown.  A zero score in the early rounds will mean that a RERUN will have to be flown - otherwise it should be a 200 score.

Note this system calculates the final score for each round and then rounds off to the first decimal place.  This is according to the rules of the sporting code.

When Keying in data it is advisable to increase the screen size (Standard it shows 75%) - this makes entering data so easy.  I like it to be 200%. This can be enlarged via the Spread sheet size option at the top of the Excel Screen.

All rounds must be accounted for - If a contestant has a no start "ds" or cannot complete all the rounds "df" - Just key in df or ds in the cuts column for the missing and remaining rounds - this will give him a score of 200 for the uncontested rounds.

If a contestant has been awarded a rerun just key in R  in the cuts column and he will get a 200 score

5)      After all the variable data has been input for that period to get the  TOTAL  column and  TEAM  totals displayed  you have to hit the following keys simultaneously   Shift Ctrl j to get the Macro Program  to work.  The Totals and Team Scores will then appear.

6)      If you wish to alter any of the times just type over the top of them and hit Shift Ctrl j a new score will appear.

7)      REGULAR SAVING OF YOUR SCORE SHEET WHILST INPUTTING OF SCORES  IS A VERY GOOD HABIT TO GET INTO - THIS WILL ENSURE THAT ALL THAT DATA YOU HAVE KEYED INTO THE PROGRAM WILL NOT BE LOST.

8)      Always ensure that the last thing you do is hit  Shift Ctrl j to ensure that you have the correct totals.

VERY IMPORTANT:

You can delete data on this spread sheet by simply dragging the mouse from the top LH corner of page to the bottom RH corner of the Data.  When you do this it will highlight that area.  You can then hit the Delete Key - and all the data will disappear.

DO NOT DO THIS AS YOU WILL ALSO DELETE ALL THE FORMULAS AND MACROS THAT RESIDE IN THIS PROGRAM.

The Scores Program will then be useless:

This is why you must have a back up copy of this Scores Program.

 TO PRINT THE  SCORES SHEET:

At some stage you will want to print the scores sheet to display for the contestants to see how they are going.

I have constructed the Sheet so that it has 15 rounds.  This is purely for convenience sake - I could have made it any number. Also I have made a maximum of 70 contestants.  This can also be easily altered by editing the Macro - changing the value.

Now you do not want to print a lot of blank rounds.  So you have to Temporarily HIDE those unwanted rounds.

Excel has provision for this.  At the top of the Excel sheet there are Column Numbers starting from A and going on forever in alpha sequence.

NOTE: On earlier versions of Excel you will have to highlight the actual columns prior to Hiding them,  Remember try this out and if you make a mistake  -  EDIT and then UNDO  will get you back.

You just drag your mouse whilst holding onto the LH button over all those columns you do not need.

 They will then be highlighted.

You then do the following

Select

 1.      Format on the top Toolbar

2.      Column

3.      Hide

The unwanted columns will then disappear.

To Print the sheet displayed .

Highlight all the area of the sheet that you want to print by dragging the mouse whilst holding down the LH button from the Top LH corner of the sheet and diagonally across the page to the Bottom RH Corner.  The area to be printed will then be highlighted in gray. Just like this example.

Select File  from the top Tool bar then Print then SELECTION BUTTON  and  THEN set up the printer for landscape printing - through options.

TO BRING BACK THOSE HIDDEN ROUNDS:

1.      Click the column to the immediate left to the column where the hidden column ends and drag the mouse to the column immediately to the right of that column.

2.      Then use Format Column Unhide in the reverse method to what you hid them originally.

3.      The columns will immediately reappear.

TO SORT SHEET FOR INDIVIDUAL PLACINGS:

After all the rounds have been flown for the day or at a particular point - it is nice to be able to sort out the contestants to see how they are placing.

Drag the Mouse from the Bottom RH Corner of the Scoring Sheet Starting from the TOTAL Column and finishing at the top LH Corner - DO NOT INCLUDE THE HEADINGS:  This area will then be shaded.  DO NOT SELECT THE TEAM COLUMN -otherwise it will not make any sense.

Then Click the Sort Button on the Top Tool Bar A-Z.  The sheet will be sorted with the lowest competitor score on top. With the highest score at the bottom.

You must do this exactly as I have detailed - Otherwise the whole sheet could get out of order.

IF YOU DO NOT DO THIS CORRECTLY -

GO TO EDIT - AND UNDO THE LAST ACTION AND THE WORKSHEET WILL BE CORRECTED.

To get the Sheet back to its original order again

Run the mouse from the top LH Corner ( No)  (Under the Headings) to the  bottom RH Corner - highlighting that area of the work sheet .  This is exactly the reverse direction to the above - and then hit the Same Sort Button as Above A-Z.  This will then return the sheet to normal.

Remember any problems must be correctly immediately - Use Edit and Undo to bring the data back.

NOTE: SORTS CAN ALSO BE PERFORMED FOR TEAM PLACINGS:

WARNING BULK DELETES: Do not do them otherwise you can wipe out Macros and Formulas.

F

inally this is a complete system - it must be played around with and learnt - A small knowledge of how to use Excel would be handy. A few minutes of instruction is really all that is required to ensure the operator is sufficiently skilled to run the scoring system.

Perhaps this may seem to be a complex system at first - but after a while it will get easy for you - I do not think that there is anything simpler available:

However Care must be exercise with Deleting data and performing sorts.

It may be better to overwrite scores rather than physically deleting them if you are not completely familiar with Excel.
