AMPRA RESULTS

Cohuna Vic  June 2006:

This year the AMPRA Championships which are really the Australian Pylon Championships were held at Cohuna over the Queen's Birthday long weekend.

The very first Ampra Champs were held at Cohuna in 1977 - I know because I was there and I selected the site.  This site was selected because of the Cohuna Club and their membership.  It is good to go to Cohuna because they do everything - no assistance is required - all you have to do is turn up and fly.

The only problem I have is the cold weather.  Brother does it get cold there - on some occasions the cold hurts.  Why because Cohuna skirts the desert - and this promotes a cold wind.

Saturday was overcast - light wind and not that cold.  Sunday and Monday was cold and windy.  Everyone was well looked after by the Cohuna people who manned the canteen and ran all the racing.

F3D  had a rather good entry for Australia - mainly because there was a group of people from Queensland Attending - we missed him when he went to live in the USA.  They even adopted him over there and made him a fully blown member of the USA World Championship team.

They ran 9 rounds of F3D.  The Winner was Chris Callow with the best time of 57.46, and did not get out of the 50's - that is just about as good a set of times that I have ever seen.  Second was Ranjit with a best of 59.23. Third was Graham with a best of 58.59.  Thirty people entered and it was nice to see names that I have not seen for some time.

I was a bit disappointed with Bruce DeChastel - we all know that you are a champion flyer.  Perhaps you need another caller?

With F400 we had 20 entries.  This is the Australian version of the US QM40 - only we run from a bigger course and use straight fuel.  Andrew Davies won that with a best time of 67.7 - that is about as fast as we can go in Australia - and Andrew always goes well in this event.  Bruce DeChastel came second best 71.47.  Third was M Hunt with a best of 76.66.

In Quarter Midget which is a full blown racing class using 2.5 car engines we only had 13 entries.  Ranjit broke the record with a 56.06. Second was Brian Steele  best 62.65 - Brian always does well with such little preparation.

Third was Glen Matthews who has done some much work in this class - as far as aircraft design best 61.79

We ran Q500 for the first time at the AMPRA Champs, and only had 7 entries.  Tom Wetherill won with a time of 80.65. Followed by D Martin with 89.93 and then Robin Gray with 89.57.

Many Thanks to Gary Davidson for the good photos.
