As a Justice of the Peace (Qualified) I belong to a centuries old system of Voluntary Legal Officers, known as Justice of the Peace.
In the 14th Century, a system of Peace Officers was introduced into England, to enforce the Kings Peace. (any offence against the peace was considered to be an offence against the King Himself, and, therefore was treated severely).
King Edward 111, by way of legalisation introducing Peace Officers to deal with less serious offences. This allowed the Judges the time to deal with more serious offences. These Peace Officers were allowed to use the title Justices and so, over the years, became known as Justice of the Peace. |

Today, Justice of the Peace applicants are sought from a wide section of the community.
Justices of the Peace are respected citizens who are intrusted by their community to take on special responsibilities, from witnessing and signing of documents, to hearing certain types of Court Cases.
By dealing with routine matters, Justices of the Peace (Qualified) have allowed Lawyers and the Courts to concentrate on cases that require professional legal training.
As years past, so did the responsibility of J.P.s.. In recent years, with the onset of more complex and intricated legislation, the JPs role has been taken over partly by the appointment of professionally Qualified Magistrates.
This has not however diminished the importance of the J.P. in todays society. In fact, recent legislation is imposing more responsibility upon the J.P. to ensure that objectives of legislation are carried out properly. An Enduring Power of Attorney is one example of this responsibility. |
