![]() "Farewell The Athenaeum" SocialSaturday 21st July 2001
The theme of our 2001 social was to farewell the historic Athenaeum Hall in Doncaster Road, Doncaster. The Athenaeum was a landmark in the Doncaster area for many years dating back to the days when Doncaster Road was a dirt track for horses and buggies! Many of us have fond memories of dancing in the old hall.
The view on the left was taken before the supper room was added in 1914, taken from the corner of Church Road. Shows the side wall of the original 1870 hall, as well as the timber additions at the rear containing the Library and Lodge Room. The adjoining paddock, belonging to the Church of England, is bounded by a post and 3-rail fence. The view on the right shows the altered front resulting from the widening of Doncaster Road in about 1971. Back to home page |
