Arthur Ernest WALKINGTON

Notes from research by Newton Walkington

Was born on 24th May, 1879 probably at Melrose. Little is known about his early life but about the turn of the century he went to Western Australia and was at Ravensthorpe with his brothers Albert and Gilbert. About 1904 he married Susan Alma McCaffry (who was born in Adelaide) in Ravensthorpe. After the marriage Arthur and Susan moved to Queensland. It is possible that before he was married he was at a copper mine in New Guinea. It is known that in 1912 he was manager of the O.K. Mine at Chillagoe near Cairns in Queensland. In June of that year while down the mine trying to rescue a workman (who was saved) he was overcome by foul air, fell into the water and was drowned. His wife was at Manly, New South Wales or Cairns Queensland at the time Arthur died and her twin daughters were born there. Later she married Percival Whitewood and lived in Carr Street, Leederville for seven years with her mother and three children. She then moved to Aberdeen Street, Perth where she lived for twenty years and was a tailoress at Boans Department Store. After that she moved to Margaret River and was there for about thirty years during this time she had a store and later a guest home. A street in Margaret River is named after her son Ray who was killed in the Second World War.
