Thomas Henry HOBAN was born in Birmingham in December 1871. By the time of the 1881 Census his father, John HOBEN was absent and his mother, Jane Harris, and her children were living with Henry BATES, a brass worker,in Angelina Terrace, Angelina Street, Aston, Birmingham. In 1884 his two older brothers, Richard and Edward joined the Kings Royal Rifles and served overseas in Gibraltor and Cyprus during which time Richard was killed in action.

In 1889 Thomas married Agnes Emma BARNES who was born in Sparkbrook in 1870. The couple lived in Birmingham for the first fifeteen years of their marriage and had many children there. Sometime between 1903 and 1905 the family moved to Smethwick, Kings Norton where several more children were born.

Thomas and Emma's eldest surviving son, Thomas Henry HOBAN Jnr, married in 1914 Kings Norton to Annie BENCH. They had twin sons in 1915, one of whom died at birth. They named the surviving twin Thomas Henry also. Later Thomas Henry jnr joined the Rifle Brigade and fought in WW1. He was killed on 15 September 1916 in France and is bured in Thiepval, France. His wife, Annie Bench remarried in 1920 to Albert W. HARTLEY in Kings Norton.

The HOBAN surname has seen many different spellings over time. Originating in Ireland it's variants have included; Hoban, Hoben, Hobin, Hobbon, Hobern, Hoborn and even Habern, as seen in the 1901 census. Although it is not a very common surname name in the UK, the many variations in spelling has made tracing the family's history in and around Birmingham, Selly Oak & Smethwick, Kings Norton quite a challange.
