Ann HOBAN was born in Birmingham, UK. Her birth was registered as Ann HOBEN born 20th January 1870,
although she celebrated her birthday on the 25th December, Christmas Day. She immigrated to Ontario Canada in 1886 where she married William BEAN in Paris,
Ontario, 15 August 1891.
The family oral history says that Ann's brother, Edward HOBAN, inherited a stone mason's business which he passed on to his sister.
It is said the sale of this stone mason's business enabled Ann to buy her passage to Canada.
After their marriage, William and Annie BEAN settled in Paris, Ontario, Canada where they had a large family of five girls and five boys.
Several of their sons were policemen, with Thomas BEAN being Chief of Police in Paris, Ontario for some 27 years. Their son William Henry BEAN (Buzz)
was head of the Department of Highways, remarkably this was despite being unable to read and write,
and son-in-law, William ENGLAND, was Mayor of Paris, Ontario in the 1940s.
Annie and William lost two sons to World War Two. Edward, who served in the Regina Rifle Regiment,
died in France in 1944 and is buried
in the Bretteville-sur-Laize Canadian War Cemetery, France.
Lawrence died of the effects of war in 1948.
Edward's three children and
Lawrence's daughters, Marie and Lorna, were raised by their grandmother. Lawrence's wife, Laura Ellen Russell, died tragically in a house fire during the early 1940s.
Olive BEAN's son, Jack CATER, also lived with his grandmother
after the death of his father and younger brother and the remarriage of his mother.
Annie BEAN passed away in 1952 but her two unmarried children, Lillian and William BEAN,
carried on their mother's work of providing a home for her orphaned grandchildren.

Washington Street, Paris, Ontario
The Beans were a very close knit and loving family who mostly lived within a short distance of
Annie Bean's house on the corner of Washington Street, Paris. Lorna Bean recalls that next door to her grandma's house
was the home of Aunt Evelyn with
Aunt Bea (Marie) living directly opposite. To the left of Aunt Bea's was Aunt Irene's house and a block away was
Uncle Tom's. A few blocks further down the street was where Aunt
Olive lived. Surrounded by eyes as she was, Lorna found it very difficult to get away with anything as a child.
Lorna remembers her grandma Annie Bean with great affection. She recalls some of her most vivid
memories of her, such as that she would iron everything, always and everyday
would put on a fresh dress which at night would be turned inside out to use as
a nightie. She also had the odd habit of hiding her purse in the oven.
These memories of her grandma still make Lorna smile when she thinks of her.
Undoubtedly Lorna's favourite uncle was William "Buzz" Bean who was more like a father to her. She acquired the nickname "Buzzer" because where ever "Buzz" went Lorna was
never too far behind. Buzz was engaged to be married at the time his mother took on the raising of her five grandchildren but broke off
the engagement to help his mother financially. He and his sister Lil, who worked at Penman's, would hand over
their weekly pay packets to their mother who then gave them an allowance. After their mother's death in 1952 Buzz and Lil continued to
provide a home for their mother's grandchildren.
BEAN PARK in Paris, Ontario is named after the Bean family who donated the land to the town. William and Annie Bean had owned the land
for many years, but it was mostly swamp and "not good for very much". Lorna and her sister Marie remember that,
after their father Lawrence Bean came back from World War 2, he would take them both down there to feed the ducks and geese.
When their grandmother Annie Bean passed away in 1952 the land went to Aunt Lil and after her death in 1968 it passed to Aunt Bea (Marie)
who soon after gave the land to the town.
