Homberg oral tradition mentions that the family, for many generations, were smiths who owned the smithy on top of the Homberg, Menden, Wesphalia. According to the story, the family business was squandered away by one of the ancestors who turned to drink.
Marriage records of Caspar Homberg list Friedrich's occupation as Ackermann = ploughman, whereas at the marriage of Franz Homberg his occupation is listed as "Schmied auf dem Homberg" (smith on the Homberg). At the marriage of Caspar Heinrich (1854) he is deceased and listed as Friedrich Homberg, Schmiedemeister = master smith of Homberg.
Friedrich Homberg could well be the ancestor who drank away the family business. His older children all had trades, whereas the younger ones were laboures or stablehands, a clear indication in the decline in the family circumstances.
