Note for:   Edward John Trelawny,   13 NOV 1792 - 13 AUG 1881         Index

Occupation:   Adventurer

Individual Note:
Trelawny lived a life of almost incredible adventure. He entered the Royal Navy aged 11, and deserted to lead a life of adventure, which he described in "Adventures of a Younger Son", 1831. In Pisa in 1821 he met Percy Bysshe Shelley and Lord Byron.

In Italy, Trelawny's friendship with Shelley grew, and after Shelley's tragic death it was Trelawny who supervised the cremation of his body on an Italian beach, and then helped to raise enough money to allow Mary Shelley to return to England.

With Byron in 1823, Trelawny fought for the freedom of Greece. He described his friendship with Shelley and Byron in "Records of Shelley, Byron, and the Author", 1878.
He lived in a cave on Mount Atlas with a Greek chieftain. While visiting America, he bought a slave in order to set him free.

He married at least 4 times. His first wife was a girl from Borneo, as he described in "Adventures of a Younger Son". The second was Caroline Julia Addison. The third was a Greek woman, and the fourth was the former Lady Goring. A family story was that his second wife was only a small woman, and when she was naughty he would dangle her out of the window by the scruff of her neck until she was good again.

He died at the age of 89, and at his request his ashes were buried beside those of Shelley in Rome.
