Old Dutch hill-top retreat was established in 1745. There is a cemetery located in a plantation in the grounds of the Residence of the Governor-General (later the Presidential Palace of Sukarno), which has 34 graves, mainly relating to officials. It includes those of Capt. Drury and George Addison. Near the cemetery is a small monument to Olivia Raffles. There is also a municipal cemetery where there are graves to Inspector-General D. Maarschalk, and also Henry Shoolbred (my ref: p147) and Claude Venning (my ref: p150).
Individual Note: George was born in Calcutta and at an early age was sent to England for his education. In his fifth year he was entered at Hackney school where he excelled. At the age of sixteen he embarked for India. He engaged in Indigo planting in Bengal for more than four years and was worse off than when he began by four or five thousand rupees. He had a great horror of being in debt and therefore sold his share of the business for R20,000. He hoped to get the post of Deputy Superintendent of Embarkments at R400 per month, but was disappointed as Lord Minto the Governor General did away with the post. His thoughts then turned to Java, and with the help of his friends in Calcutta and elsewhere he obtained a post with Mr. T.S Raffles Governor of Java.
His vicissitudes as a planter and his exertions and life in Calcutta are touched upon in many cases in "Familiar Correspondence In India" which are mostly his letters to his friends. He sailed to Java just after Lord Moira arrived in India succeeding Lord Minto as Governor General, with optimistic hopes of being able to combat the climate. This was apparently at the end of 1813. He soon became very valuable to Mr. Raffles and secured the appointment of Assistant Secretary to Revenue and Judicial Departments, having the conduct of the "Secret and Political, Foreign Dependencies, Military, Revenue & Judicial Departments" at a salary of R1200 per month. On the departure of Mt Assey, the secretary to the Government in India, it was arranged that George Addison (who had only been in Java a few months) should be acting secretary in his absence and a resolution of Council was drawn up to that effect, but for various reasons it was thought better to have this appointment vacant. The Familiar Correspondence contains interesting descriptions of life in Java. He was also appointed acting private secretary to the Governor and lived with him. He died in January 1815 of fever.
