http://www.newcastle.nsw.gov.au/services/culture/library/research/localstudies/waratah.cfm] Thomas Grove came to Waratah in 1843 from Raymond Terrace. He had purchased a large amount of land and dabbled in timber getting and fruit farming. He also explored the area for coal and in 1859 found some in the Braye Park Hill area. By 1863 the Waratah Coal Company had been formed with Grove, A.A.P. Tighe (his son-in-law), T.S. Mort, T.W. Smart, C. Smith, B. Daley, and Wm. Steel as directors. They quickly bought land along the river, the future Port Waratah and begun to construct a railway.
Grove subdivided some of his land near the mine into half acre lots and sold them off to miners and other who came to the mine. The village of Hanbury, named after Grove's hometown in England soon sprang up to become the second village in the area.
